Highranking GIZ officials visit Butuan

BUTUAN City, PH — Top officials of the GIZ in Asia visited this historic city on 06-07 May and engaged in a very productive and learning exchanges with staff and personnel of various GIZ programs and their partner government agencies.

Mr. Joachim Prey, director-general for GIZ’s Asia, Latin America and Caribbean Department; together with Michael Weiss, GIZ country manager for the Philippines; and Irina Scheffman, GIZ country director for the Philippines and Pacific Islands, arrived in Butuan on the night of May 05 (Saturday). The following day, a Sunday, they spent half a day in a very productive afternoon at the GIZ Office in Butuan, where the COSERAM Program and the program on Strengthening Capacities on Conflict-induced Forced Displacement in Mindanao are housed.

Johanna Sztucki and Charlotte Lozada of the new 3-year program Strengthening Capacities on Conflict-induced Forced Displacement in Mindanao briefed them first. Dr. Herwig Mayer and Nicole Bendsen then briefed the visitors about Module I and Module II, respectively, of the COSERAM Program. Peter Hauschnik, coordinator of the Mindanao Cluster also shared some insights and experiences during the briefings. A colleague from the Civil Peace Service (CPS), Gavan Kelly, also briefed the visitors. Some national personnel also shared their core processes during the briefings.

After the briefing of the different GIZ programs, Mr. Prey, Mr. Weiss and Ms. Scheffman had a short but enlightening dialogue with several national personnel. During the dialogue, GIZ Philippines and Pacific Island Country Director Scheffman was busy taking down important notes, which she promised to bring up in a discussion with the members of the Board of the National Personnel Development Group (NPDG) in their monthly Jour Fixe.

The highranking GIZ officials also enjoyed the slightly-sour but sweet-tasting Libas Jam, a livelihood product by a group of Agusanon Manobos in Loreto, Agusan del Sur, which the COSERAM Program helped to establish.

Before leaving Butuan late afternoon of 07 May, Mr. Prey, Mr. Weiss, and Ms. Scheffman also spend several hours of fruitful and learning exchanges with various partner government agencies such as the NEDA, DILG, NCIP, MinDA and OPAPP.
